As part of May's special activities, our team are running a Pelvic Floor Health workshop. On this page you will find some additional resources, along with the booklet from the workshop.
Why is pelvic floor health important?
Pelvic floor health is crucial for overall well-being as it plays a significant role in various bodily functions. The pelvic floor muscles support the bladder, bowel, and uterus (in women), helping to maintain control over urinary and bowel movements. Strong pelvic floor muscles can prevent issues such as incontinence, which can significantly impact quality of life.
Additionally, these muscles contribute to sexual health by enhancing sensation and function. For women, maintaining pelvic floor health is particularly important during pregnancy and postpartum recovery, as it can aid in a smoother childbirth process and quicker recovery. Overall, a healthy pelvic floor is essential for maintaining independence, comfort, and confidence in daily activities.
How can i maintain pelvic floor health?
Maintaining pelvic floor health is essential for overall well-being and can be achieved through several practices. Regular pelvic floor exercises, often referred to as Kegel exercises, are a key component. These exercises involve contracting and relaxing the pelvic floor muscles, which can help strengthen them and improve their function. It's important to perform these exercises correctly and consistently for the best results.
In addition to exercises, maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the strain on the pelvic floor muscles. A balanced diet rich in fiber can prevent constipation, which can also put pressure on these muscles. Staying hydrated and avoiding excessive caffeine and alcohol can help maintain bladder health.
Proper posture and body mechanics are also important. Avoiding heavy lifting and learning to lift correctly can prevent unnecessary strain on the pelvic floor. For women, especially during pregnancy and postpartum, it's crucial to follow specific guidelines and exercises to support pelvic floor health.
Lastly, seeking professional advice from a healthcare provider or a pelvic floor therapist can provide personalized guidance and support. They can help ensure that exercises are performed correctly and address any specific concerns or conditions related to pelvic floor health. By incorporating these practices into daily routines, individuals can maintain strong and healthy pelvic floor muscles, contributing to overall health and quality of life.
